Establishment of
the
village Important source of assistance among other things, the historical data mentioned below, is the book «Ιστορικά και Λαογραφικά Πευκοφύτου Καρδίτσας» which was written by Mr. Ilias Tibas and published with the support of association «The Anaplasis». The foundation of our village with historical data is difficult to establish and identify a specific time. However, a more likely time this particular geographical area should have been inhabited is at least the 16th century. Information leading to this conclusion is the following:
ii) The church of Saint John was built in the same place with the remainders of an older church In the same place there was two oaks estimated to be at least 300 years. During the excavation in 1977 for building a new church, observed that the roots of the two oak trees stood on the foundations of the ruined temple, which shows that the temple existed before them. iii) The most important element which is historically confirmed, is a manual record in a donation intention of the Holy Monastery "Dusiko" which was published in the 20th volume of "Θεσσαλικού Ημερολογίου" by the author Kon. Spanos. The intention as stated within, began to be written in 1530 AD and completed in 1688 AD containing 4,290 names of individuals and monks coming from villages throughout the area of Thessaly. In page 49b and with serial number 136 (which means it is close to 1530 AD due to small S / N) indicated the following. I quote the full text:
«α/α 136 Νεβροβούνιστα. Γεωργίου, Φράγγου̉, Ιωάννου, Πλούμπος (ως), Αγώρος (ως) Πελαγίας μοναχῇς »
But today villagers are probably not descendants of
those people who settled in the area (as it
is supposed) in the 16th century.
In the early 20th century, just before the revolution of 1821,
it seems that under the persecution of the Turks
all the inhabitants had to leave our village and move to a lower point, so
as to be under control by Turks. Shortly after that and according to oral
sources, it seems to arrive in the village the first families
(descendants probably of these most current residents) coming either from Messolongi after its fall in 1826 or from the mainland
(Ipiros)
chased by Ali Pasha. These first families were: Tsitsonis,
Athanasiu, Apostolakopoulou, Plitharas,
Koutsogiannis, Dimitrakopoulos and later Kourtis and Tibas. The village remained under Turkish control until 1881 . Then there was war for liberation and although there is not enough evidence it seems that most of the residents participated actively. In Asia Major Disaster in 1922 participated and gave their lives as follows: Costas D. Dimitrakopoulos, George Eyagg. Papapostolou, Christos G. Panayiotou, Dimitrios V. Dimitrakopoulos, George N. Zachos, Nicholas C. Apostolakopoulos, Vasileios Kon. Apostolakopoulos. In 1918
about 35 people died as a result of an influenza pademic. It was probably
the "Spanish flu" that challenged globally 20% of the population and caused
50 million deaths.
The end of civil war found the whole
county in ruins so was my village. As with almost all villages of the
province a few jerky movements made by individuals and organizations without
central guidance did not reverse the climate, so migration either in major
cities or abroad increased rapidly.
Administrative changes in Pefkofyto community over the years In the following table, you can see the administrative changes made essentially after the liberation of the whole Thessaly by the Turks in 1881 until today.
From
historical perspective, there is an old stone arched bridge named "Palaiokamara"
work of the Holy Vissarionos again according to the tradition, which spans
the river Pamissos located 2.5 km from Mouzaki and it visible from the road
to Argithea. In
"Palaia
Theotokos"
area archaeological research has found the foundations of an old church with
mosaic floors while at
"Vamvakies"
place there are two stone mills. Finally, reference has to be made to the
efforts of the Progressive Association of Pefkofyto «The Anaplasis» to
gather old traditional items for the creation of a folklore museum.
Population changes in our village In the table below you can see the population growth of our village from the late 19th century until today. It should be emphasized that these figures refer to the official census data.
Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul is the oldest in Pefkofyto, built in 1952 on a smaller church that dates back to 1863. The church is now thoroughly hagiographed. In the new church you can find icons removed from the old temple with creation year back in 1772.
