The Municipality of Mouzaki in figures and geography

Ανθοχώρι Βατσουνιά Γελάνθη Πορτή Μουζάκι Ελληνόκαστρο Αμυγδαλή Μαυρομμάτι Δρακότρυπα Λαζαρίνα Οξυά Κρυοπηγή Μαγουλίτσα The municipality of Mouzaki has a total area of approximately 180 thousand hectares and a population of about 15,000 inhabitants (2001 census 10.148 residents). It consists of 14 municipal districts which are the following: Amigdali, Anthohori, Vatsounia, Gelanthi, Drakotrypa, Ellinokastro, Kriopigi, Lazarina, Magoulitsa, Mavrommati, Mouzaki, Oxya, Pefkofyto, and Porti. About 33% of the land is pasture, 31% forests, 25% cultivated land, 3% covered by water, settlements 3% and 5% attributable to other areas. The geomorphology of the territory consists of 73% mountainous area, 14.5% semi-mountainous and 12.5% lowland area. Seat of the municipality is Mouzaki with a population of about 4,000 residents (2001 census 2190 inhabitants).
 

Higher mountain tops are: Zygourolivado (1.971m) Dermatas (1.722m) in Anthohori, Kafkia (1.600m) and Rahi (1.270m) in Drakotrypa, Tibanos (1.750m) in Oxya, Afentiko (1.597m) in Vatsounia, Kavalarou (1.300 m)   Blostiani (1.229m) in Anthohori, Karamitsou (1.416m) between Vatsounia - Argithea and Koutsibos (1.131m).
The biggest  river in the
city, is  Pamissos or Bliouris, which is fed by streams such as Mega Pefkofyto stream, Siafakas stream in Drakotrypa, Porti mega stream and part of the Anthochoriti stream in Anthohori.

 

 

Outline of the other municipal departments of Mouzaki municipality

Amigdali(Vrostiani)

Amigdali is a small mountainous village with few inhabitants (103 according to the census of 2001), it has an area of approximately 580 hectares located 12km away from Mouzaki. The history of the village dates back in 1339. Area attractions are the churches of Agios Dimitrios, the spa (unused) in "Bakali" area, the Agia Paraskevi gorge, and the tomb of  Diamantis (henchman of Karaiskakis). The village celebrates on 26 of July.                                                                                                            

 

Anthohori (Floresi)

Anthohori is a mountainous village built on 700 metres altitude, with an area of 1.747,8 hectares situated 12km away from Mouzaki. The village includes the settlements of Anixiatiko and Platanakos. The population according to the latest census is 503 residents. The previous name was "Floresi" and came from the Latin "flores" meaning flower. The village story begins in 16th century, at a higher altitude than its current position, called "Paleochori". During the Turkish occupation has shown strong growth but a fatal epidemic that struck the village was the cause for moving the village in its present position.

Attractions in the area are the churches of Agios Georgios, built in 1623 and renovated in 1717, Agia Paraskevi built in 1887, the renovated water mill and the arched bridge "Kamara". On the eve of the prophet Elias, a traditional feast is held in the village centre. On the next day people worship Prophet Elias in the homonymous church.                                                                                                 

 

Vatsounia

Vatsounia is built on 430 meters altitude and at a distance of 11 km from Mouzaki. Its size is about 1.400 hectares and population 605 inhabitants according to the latest census (2001). The establishment of the village is estimated in the 16th century but it may be much older, since close to the settlement and in "Palaiokklisi" area the kingdom of ancient Selles was placed. Attractions in the area are the churches of Panagias at the village centre dating back to the 16th century and Agios Nikolaos which was built in 1900 in basilica style. The village celebrates on July 26 Agia Paraskevi.

Today Vatsounia remains a "living" village since it hosts a primary school and a nursery. Worthy of reference is a bottling water plant as well as the Community Enterprise HYDROELECTRIC S.A. producing energy equivalent to 600 KW while the water is used for irrigation.                                                  

 

Gelanthi
Gelanthi is a lowland village built on an altitude of 115 metres and only 3 km away from Mouzaki. It has an area of approximately 520 hectares and a population of 542 inhabitants (2001 census). Although the wider area has historically been inhabited by the Byzantines, the establishment of the village is dated in the early 19th century consisting of about 30 homes. The church Kimisis
tis Theotokou has an octagonal dome dating from the early 19th century but time managed significant damage. People are involved in farming and agriculture.
                                                                                                                      

 

Drakotrypa (Sklataina)
The Drakotrypa is a mountainous village at an altitude of 650
metres with an area of 1.970,4 hectares including settlements of Arpakia, Keramario, Milies, Agia Triada, Spathes, Trygona and Tsarouchi. Total population is 690 inhabitants (2001 census). The establishment of the village is likely to have taken place during the 15th century while at the same period it was home of Agios Dionisios of Olympus. During the Turkish occupation swords were made in Spathes area (meaning in Greek) swords. The Monastery of Agia Triada was built in 1743 while the church of Agios Ioannis the Baptist was built in 1741.

Drakotrypa has an important tradition of craftsmen specialising in building stone homes, as a result of their origin coming from Konitsa famous for its craftsmen. Many people practice today the same profession and there are also many farmers. Finally in recent years, considerable success in world level has been achieved in sports by athletes originating from Drakotrypa.                                                

 

Ellinokastro (Vounista)
Ellinokastro is built on 550 metres altitude and 10 km away from Mouzaki.
It is a mountainous village with 201 inhabitants (2001 census) and it has an area of 1.162,8 hectares including the settlements Gravia and Petrota. The establishment of the village is calculated in the 15th century. Churches of the village are: Agia Triada, Kimisis tis Theotokou, Ioannis the Baptist, dating between the 17th and 18th century. The village celebrates on the Holy Spirit day.                                                                      

 

Kriopigi (Zeretsi)
Kriopigi is built on 550
metres altitude and it has an area of 935,2 hectares. It is 10km away from Mouzaki and includes the settlements of Lakkes and Xirokambos with total population of 429 inhabitants according to the latest census. The village celebrates the July 1 of the Agioi Anargyroi. In the village centre stands the church Kimisis tis Theotokou built in 1902.                                                          
 

 

Lazarina
Lazarina is a flat village (120
metres altitude) which is 6km away from Mouzaki. It has an area of 787,7 hectares and 443 inhabitants (2001 census). The village history is very interesting since the first sugar and rice factory in Greece were built there in 1894 and 1877 respectively and they are remarkable industrial heritage sites. Impressive is also the family mansion of Zografou.

Lazarina has a farm of breeding horses since 1932 through the "HIPPOTOUR S.A. for the sole purpose of breeding racing horses. Recently the village is specializing in producing mushrooms in large scale       

 

Magoulitsa
Magoulitsa is built on an altitude of 110 metres. It has an area of 950 hectares and it is inhabited by 823 residents (2001 census). Worth   mentioning in the area are the church
Panagia of Bripis (1813) and the Monastery of Agios Athanasios (1883).                                                                                            

 

Mavrommati
Mavrommati is a flat
town with 2.020 inhabitants (2001 census) including settlements of Karaiskakis George and the Monastery of Agios Georgios. It is 1 km away from Mouzaki, it has an area of 1.605,3 hectares and it is famous for being birthplace of George Karaiskakis . The inhabitants are principally engaged in agriculture (cotton, tobacco, corn, wheat, sugar beets, grapes) and farming, while not missing the artisans and traders.

 

In the centre square of the   village you can admire the bronze equestrian statue of George Karaiskakis made by sculptor G. Pappas (1990). Also two kilometres outside the village you will find the monastery of Agios Georgios similar to the monasteries found in the holy mountain Athos, which was built in 1550 and its icons are dated back in 1657.                                                                                                 

 

Mouzaki

Mouzaki is the seat of our municipality, it is a flat area (elevation 180 meters)  approximately 1.030,2 hectares and its population is 2,190 inhabitants according to 2001 census. It is 28km away from Karditsa and works as a crossroad and communication hub of Karditsa prefecture to Argithea region, Epirus and Trikala prefecture. The area of Mouzaki was inhabited at least in the 4th century B.C. since it is known that in "Episkopi" area the ancient settlement of Gomfon pre-existed. In 1943 Mouzaki experienced total destruction after burnt down by the Italians.

Today residents are working as employees (public - private), farmers, traders and there are also some traditional occupations. In Mouzaki you will find several government departments, banks as well as schools for primary and secondary education.

Oxya is a mountainous village at 900 metres altitude, it has an area of 2
.758,1 hectares and is built 22km away from Mouzaki. The population of the official 2001 census was 689 residents, including the settlements of (Vagenia, Daphni, Zamanatiko, Koura, Megali Vrisi, Mesorachi, Palaiampela, Paleochori, Platania, Soula, Sikia). The establishment of the village is estimated to happen in between 14th and 15th century A.D. The name Oxya (meaning beech) replaced the older Siam in 1930 profoundly due to the beech forest near the village.
Attraction of the village is the Monastery of the
Agia Triada, built in the early 17th century and enjoys a prime location. Also at Palaiampela there is a stone-built mill still on duty today, aged about a century.

 
Porti 

Porti is a mountainous village at 650 metres altitude, it has an area of 1.670,3 hectares and it is located 5 km away from Mouzaki. Together with the settlements of Martini, Meligos and Palaiokastro total about 529 inhabitants (2001 census). Historical interests are the churches of Kimisis tis Theotokou built in 1592 at a rate three-aisle basilica with 6 wooden pillars in the nave and 2 in the narthex, the church of Agios Nikolaos and Agios Georgios built in 1872 and 1895 respectively. You will find also two mills and an arched bridge located in the "Toskis" area. The village celebrates on July 20 Prophet Elias.
